Combivir

  • Combivir is a combination of 2 drugs (Retrovir and Epivir).
  • These are both Nucleoside reverse transciptase inhibitor drugs (NRTIs).
  • Generally, two NRTIs are used in all triple therapy (HAART) drug combinations. 
  • Take one tablet twice a day, morning and evening (at 12 hour intervals as far as possible).
  • Combivir can be taken with or without food.
  • Potential side effects (generally mild)
    • headaches
    • nausea, rash, fatigue
    • numbness or tingling of limbs

Kaletra

  • Combination of two protease inhibitors (Ritonavir and Lopinavir)
  • Take two tablets twice daily approx. 12 hours apart.
  • There are no food restrictions.
  • Potential side effects include
    • Tingling in hand and feet
    • Nausea
    • Skin rashes
    • Myalgia
    • Fatigue
    • Anaemia (and neutropenia)
